Life Insurance

Life insurance is more than buying a policy. It's about protecting the people and goals that matter most.

Whether you're looking to protect your family's income, pay off your mortgage, protect your business, or review the coverage you already have, you're in the right place. I'll help you understand your options and find a strategy that's built around your goals—not someone else's sales goals.

What Can Life Insurance Help Protect?

People buy life insurance for many different reasons, and no two families have exactly the same priorities. The right coverage starts with understanding what you're trying to protect, then choosing a strategy that fits your goals, your budget, and your family.

Protect Your Family's Income

Help replace lost income so your family can continue paying everyday expenses, stay in their home, and maintain financial stability if you're no longer there to provide for them.

Pay Off a Mortgage

Life insurance can help ensure your family isn't forced to sell their home or struggle with mortgage payments during an already difficult time.

Leave a Legacy

Whether it's providing for children, grandchildren, or a favorite charity, life insurance can help you leave behind more than memories.

Cover Final Expenses

Funeral costs, medical bills, and other final expenses can add up quickly. Life insurance can help relieve that financial burden from your loved ones.

Protect Your Business

If you own a business, life insurance can help protect loans, fund buy-sell agreements, or provide financial stability for your family and business partners.

Preserve Long-Term Protection

In some situations, permanent life insurance can provide lifelong protection, preserve insurability, or support broader financial goals later in life.

How Do I Choose the Right Life Insurance?

Choosing life insurance can feel overwhelming, especially with so many policy types, insurance companies, and opinions online. The good news is you don't have to figure it out on your own. My job is to understand your goals, explain your options in plain English, and make a recommendation you can feel confident about.

Sometimes that recommendation is a new policy. Sometimes it's keeping the coverage you already have. Either way, my goal is to help you make the right decision—not simply sell you another policy.

Here's what that process looks like:

1- Understand Your Goals

Before discussing policies or prices, we'll talk about what you're trying to protect. Whether your goal is replacing income, paying off a mortgage, protecting your business, or leaving a legacy, every recommendation starts with understanding what matters most to you.

2- Review Your Existing Coverage

If you already have life insurance, we'll review it together before making any recommendations. Sometimes your current coverage is exactly what you need. Other times, it may make sense to supplement, convert, or replace it based on your goals.

3- Compare Your Options

As an independent broker, I compare multiple highly rated insurance companies and policy options to find the best fit for your goals, health, and budget. Every company evaluates applicants differently, and choosing the right one can make a significant difference.

4- Make a Confident Decision

Once we've reviewed your goals and compared your options, I'll explain my recommendation in plain English so you can move forward with confidence. My goal is to help you make the right decision—not simply sell you another policy.

Which Type of Life Insurance Is Right for You?

There's no single life insurance policy that's right for everyone. The best choice depends on your goals, your budget, your health, and how long you need protection. Here are the two primary categories of life insurance and when each may make sense.

Term Life Insurance

Affordable coverage for a specific period of time

Designed for people who want cost-effective coverage for a specific need, such as protecting a mortgage, replacing income, raising a family, or covering business obligations.

Best for:

Mortgage Protection • Income Replacement • Young Families • Business Loans • Buy-Sell Agreements

Permanent Life Insurance

Lifelong protection with long-term planning flexibility.

Designed for people who want coverage that lasts a lifetime. Depending on the type of policy, permanent life insurance may provide guaranteed protection, build cash value, or support long-term financial goals.

Best for:

Final expenses • Estate planning • Lifelong coverage • Leaving a legacy • Long-term financial planning

Not Sure Which Is Right?

That's okay. Most people aren't.

We'll review your goals, explain the pros and cons of each option and recommend the solution that's the best fit for your situation. Sometimes that's term insurance. Sometimes it's permanent coverage. Sometimes it's keeping the policy you already have.

Real People, Real Stories

Every client's situation is different, but the goal is always the same: helping people make confident insurance decisions before they're needed, then being there when they are.

More Than Just a Policy

A husband and wife came to me looking for guidance, not just another life insurance policy. Together, we reviewed the coverage they already had, talked through their goals, and made a few thoughtful changes to strengthen their family's financial protection.

Years later, that plan was put to the test when the husband passed away. During one of the most difficult times of her life, I helped his wife navigate the claims process, coordinate benefits, and work through the financial and administrative details that follow the loss of a loved one.

Because we had prepared ahead of time—and because she didn't have to navigate everything alone—she was able to pay off her home and focus on her family instead of wondering what to do next.

That's what life insurance should do. And that's the kind of support every family deserves.

Life Insurance FAQs

Honest answers to the questions people ask most often.

Buying life insurance comes with a lot of questions, and it should. Below are honest, straightforward answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often. If you don't see yours here, feel free to reach out. I'm always happy to help.

How Much Life Insurance Do I Need?

A good starting point for many families is enough coverage to replace income, pay off major debts like a mortgage, and provide financial security for those who depend on you.

Beyond that, every situation is different. Young families often need more coverage than empty nesters. Business owners may need additional protection for loans, business partners, or key employees. Existing savings, retirement accounts, and the life insurance you already have should also be part of the conversation.

Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all formula, I'd encourage you to look at the complete picture so you can choose an amount of coverage that makes sense for your family, your goals, and your budget.

How Much Does Life Insurance Cost?

Life insurance is often much more affordable than people expect. Your monthly premium depends on factors such as your age, health, tobacco use, the type of policy you choose, and the amount of coverage you need. In general, the younger and healthier you are when you apply, the lower your premium is likely to be.

For many people, term life insurance provides a substantial amount of coverage for a surprisingly affordable monthly premium. Permanent life insurance generally costs more because it provides lifelong protection and may also build cash value or include other features, depending on the type of policy you choose.

If cost is one of your biggest concerns, don't assume life insurance is out of reach. Take a few minutes to explore your options. You may find that protecting your family costs less than you expected.

If you're curious what life insurance might cost, try my Life Insurance Rate Calculator to compare sample rates based on your age, gender, and tobacco use.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Life Insurance?

The best time to buy life insurance is before your health changes or before you take on financial responsibilities that others depend on you to meet.

Many people purchase life insurance after getting married, buying a home, having children, or starting a business. While these are all good reasons to consider coverage, waiting instead of planning ahead may limit your options and increase the cost of your life insurance.

If life insurance is something you've been thinking about, don't wait for the perfect time. Buying coverage while you're healthy typically gives you more choices and may help you lock in lower premiums for years to come.

What Type of Life Insurance Is Right for Me?

The right type of life insurance depends on your goals, your budget, how long you need coverage, and what you're trying to protect. There's no single policy that's right for everyone.

For many people, term life insurance is the best choice when they want affordable coverage for a specific period of time, such as paying off a mortgage or replacing income while raising a family. Others may benefit from permanent life insurance if they want lifelong protection, cash value accumulation, or have long-term planning goals.

Rather than choosing a policy based on what worked for someone else, start by thinking about what you're trying to accomplish. Once you know your goal, finding the right type of life insurance becomes much easier.

If you're still unsure, take a few minutes to review the differences between Term Life Insurance and Permanent Life Insurance above. It's a great place to start before diving into the individual policy types.

What's the Difference Between Term and Permanent Life Insurance?

Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period of time, while permanent life insurance is designed to last your entire lifetime.

Term life insurance is often the most affordable option and is commonly used to protect a mortgage, replace income, or provide financial security while raising a family.

Permanent life insurance generally costs more, but can provide lifelong coverage and, depending on the type of policy, may build cash value or offer other long-term planning benefits.

Neither option is inherently better than the other. I'd encourage you to focus first on what you're trying to accomplish, then choose the type of life insurance that best supports those goals. If you'd like to learn more, take a look at the Term Life Insurance and Permanent Life Insurance sections above.

Can I Use My Existing Life Insurance Instead of Buying a New Policy?

Yes, in many cases your existing life insurance policy may still be the best option. Before purchasing new coverage, it's important to understand what you already have and whether it still meets your needs.

Sometimes keeping your current policy makes the most sense. Other times you may benefit from adding additional coverage, converting an existing policy, replacing it with something better suited to your goals, or simply updating your beneficiaries. Every situation is different.

I'd encourage you not to assume that buying a new policy is the only answer. One of the first things I like to do is review your existing coverage so you can make an informed decision based on your current needs, not just what's available today.

Should I Buy Life Insurance Through Work or On My Own?

Employer-provided life insurance, also known as Group Term Life Insurance, is a valuable benefit, but for many people it isn't enough to meet all of their family's long-term financial needs.

Many employer plans provide a basic amount of coverage, such as $50,000, while others allow employees to purchase additional coverage up to a multiple of their annual salary. Even then, the total amount may not be enough to replace your income, pay off a mortgage, or provide long-term financial security for your family. In many cases, you may also lose some or all of that coverage if you change jobs or retire.

Think of employer-provided life insurance as a great foundation, not necessarily the complete solution. Reviewing both your workplace benefits and any individual life insurance you already have can help you determine whether your family is adequately protected.

What Happens If I Outlive My Term Life Insurance?

In most cases, your term life insurance doesn't automatically end when the level premium period expires. Instead, the premium guarantee ends, and your policy returns to its annual renewable premium. This means your premium will increase each year, and in many cases, the first increase can be substantial.

Most 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-year term life insurance policies are designed to provide a guaranteed level premium for a specific period. After that period ends, many policies remain in force on an annual renewable basis. In many cases, your coverage can remain in force until age 90 or 95, provided you continue paying the required premiums as they increase each year. The challenge is that those increasing premiums eventually become unaffordable for many people, which is why it's important to plan ahead before your level premium period ends.

I'd encourage you to review your life insurance one to three years before your level premium period expires. That gives you time to determine whether you still need coverage and, if you do, whether renewing, converting, or purchasing a new policy is the best solution for your situation.

Can I Have More Than One Life Insurance Policy?

Yes. Many people own more than one life insurance policy, and in many cases, having multiple policies is a smart financial decision.

It's common for people to add coverage as their needs change over time. For example, you might purchase a policy when you're single, add more coverage after getting married or having children, or obtain additional life insurance when buying a home or starting a business. Some people also combine term and permanent life insurance to meet different financial goals.

Rather than focusing on how many policies you have, focus on whether your overall coverage still meets your needs. Reviewing your existing policies can help identify gaps, unnecessary overlap, or opportunities to improve your overall protection without buying coverage you don't need.

Do I Need a Medical Exam to Get Life Insurance?

Not always. Many modern life insurance policies are available without a medical exam, depending on your age, health, the amount of coverage you're applying for, and which insurance company you choose.

Some policies rely on medical records, prescription history, and other information instead of a physical exam. Others, particularly those with larger amounts of coverage or certain underwriting requirements, may still require a medical exam to qualify for the best rates.

I'd encourage you not to base your decision solely on whether a medical exam is required. The better approach is to choose the policy that best fits your goals, budget, and individual situation.

Can I Get Life Insurance If I Smoke or Vape?

Yes. Smoking, vaping, cigars, chewing tobacco, nicotine pouches, marijuana, and other nicotine or tobacco products can affect your life insurance rates, but they don't automatically prevent you from qualifying for coverage.

Every insurance company has its own underwriting guidelines. Some companies distinguish between cigarette smokers, cigar smokers, and other forms of tobacco or nicotine use. Others may offer non-tobacco rates for certain products or usage patterns. Marijuana is also evaluated differently from one company to another and may depend on factors such as your age, frequency of use, reason for use, overall health, and whether it's smoked or consumed in another form, such as edibles.

Don't assume you'll automatically receive tobacco rates, or that every insurance company will view your situation the same way. Choosing the right insurance company can make a significant difference in both your eligibility and the premium you pay.

Can I Get Life Insurance If I Have Health Problems?

Yes. Having a health condition doesn't automatically prevent you from qualifying for life insurance. Many people with medical conditions are still able to obtain coverage, although the insurance company, type of policy, and premium may vary depending on your individual situation.

Taking prescription medications, managing a chronic health condition, or having a medical history is far more common than most people realize. Over the years, I've helped clients with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and many other health conditions obtain life insurance. Every insurance company evaluates medical history differently, which means one company may be a much better fit than another.

The key is not to assume you won't qualify before exploring your options. An honest conversation about your health allows us to identify the insurance companies that are most likely to offer you the best outcome.

Can I Get Life Insurance If I've Been Declined Before?

Yes. Being declined by one insurance company doesn't necessarily mean you'll be declined by every insurance company. Each insurer has its own underwriting guidelines, and some are much more favorable for certain health conditions than others.

There are many reasons someone may be declined for life insurance, including their health history, medications, occupation, hobbies, or even applying for the wrong type of policy. In some cases, enough time has passed or a person's health has improved. In others, a different insurance company may simply be a better fit for your situation.

Before assuming life insurance is no longer an option, it's worth understanding why you were declined in the first place. The reason for the decline often provides valuable insight into which insurance companies may be the best fit moving forward.

Will My Health Affect the Cost of Life Insurance?

Yes. Your health is one of the factors insurance companies use when determining your premium, but it's only one part of the overall picture.

Insurance companies also consider factors such as your age, height and weight, tobacco or nicotine use, family health history, driving record, occupation, hobbies, and the amount of coverage you're applying for. Every insurance company evaluates these factors a little differently, which is why premiums can vary from one company to another.

A health condition doesn't automatically mean your life insurance will be unaffordable. Many people are surprised to learn they have more options than they expected, especially when the right insurance company is matched to their individual situation.

Can I Buy Life Insurance If I'm Over 60?

Yes. Many people in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s are still able to qualify for life insurance, although the available options, premiums, and underwriting requirements will vary based on their age and health.

People purchase life insurance later in life for many different reasons. Some want to provide for a spouse, cover final expenses, leave a legacy for their family, replace an expiring term policy, or meet a business or estate planning need. In other cases, keeping or converting an existing policy may be a better solution than purchasing new coverage.

Age is only one part of the underwriting process. The right insurance company and policy can make a significant difference, so before assuming your options are limited, take the time to consider your goals, review any existing coverage, and explore the solutions that may be available to you.

How Long Does It Take to Get Approved for Life Insurance?

Many life insurance applications are approved within a few weeks, although the timeline can range from just a few days to several months depending on the type of policy, the insurance company, and your individual situation.

The underwriting process may include reviewing your application, medical records, prescription history, and, in some cases, a medical exam. Simpler applications can often be approved quickly, while larger amounts of coverage or more complex medical histories may require additional review.

If you're purchasing life insurance to meet a deadline, such as closing on a home, securing a business loan, or replacing an expiring policy, it's usually best to begin the process as early as possible. Allowing extra time gives you more options and helps avoid unnecessary stress.
